The power of link building via article submission

2005-04-01

I was never a big fan of link building. Unfortunately, all search engines rely on link analysis for search result rankings. Since links don't alter the content of a page, the difference between #1 and #100 on SERPs is really about the # of backlinks or the so called quality of backlinks. Link analysis, at best, is an attempt to make meaning out of no-meaning.

I released a new site on March 27. Anyway, I decided to try article submission - give one of my articles away. Article submission is less painful and frustrating than other link building techniques. Link exchange, no doubt, is the most unproductive and frustrating link building techniques. So I submitted an article "Web Development Processes and Technical Environments" to articlecity and ezinearticles on March 28.

When I searched the title "Web Development Processes and Technical Environments" on big three - G, Y and M on the evening of March, 31, I was surprised that:

  • 302 pages found on Google,
  • 61 pages found on MSN,
  • 10 pages found on Yahoo.

The numbers have grown when I searched again on the evening of April, 1.

  • 6360 pages found on Google,
  • 1202 pages found on MSN,
  • 179 pages found on Yahoo.
All those pages are about the article since the title is very specific. Not all pages are linked to my site. Most of those pages are linked to a page that published the article on their sites. There're about 10-20 pages linked to my site. Most of those title links are from devshed network and webpronews (ientry network). The article title was once appeared on page http://forums.seochat.com (looking at msn cache) the forum I frequent. I never noticed that, of course.

Google indexed 5 pages of this site, the article page itself on my site hasn't been indexed yet.

The site is too new and it ranks no where for any keywords. My hope is that those links should be helpful in a month or two for not-very-competitive keywords.

The article is short, but it does offer some original thoughts on web development. There're a few stories behind the article which I'll keep them for myself now.
